OFFICIAL: Alonso loses podium for cats in Jeddah!
Fernando Alonso lost his 100th on-track podium at the 2023 F1 Saudi Grand Prix after crossing the finish line in Jeddah in 3rd place. The Spanish driver was penalized for improper placement on the grid at the start and he was given a five-second penalty at the stop, with the FIA appearing to rule that the Spanish driver did not comply. Correctly follow the penalty.
Alonso made the most of the first 18 laps to open up a gap to his pursuer Russell and scored 6 inch 2 in that turn. He knew that if he wanted to keep, he would have to open up a bigger gap than his five seconds given him from a penalty. Then came the ‘safety car’ due to trouble with his partner Lance Stroll.
Alonso took the opportunity to stop and change the tire. However, he was given a five-second penalty the moment he pitted. So no one could touch his car until that five seconds had passed. The problem is whether the rear jack hits the vehicle. Race Direction ruled yes and Fernando he Alonso received another 10 second penalty.
Russell came in third, 5 inches 1 ahead of the Asturian. Alonso went from him third to he fourth. This was because Hamilton was over 10 seconds behind the Spaniard and could not move up the order compared to Fernando.
