Formula 1 driver from Russia demands from England to lift sanctions against him
Former Russian Formula 1 driver Nikita Mazepin He is trying to lift the sanctions imposed on him by the British government in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine and is making an effort to continue his racing career.
Mazepin has appealed to the UK’s Supreme Court to begin talks with F1 teams about the possibility of returning to racing next year.
The 24-year-old had raced for the Haas team, but his contract was terminated in March last year after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The team was funded by the Uralchem group, one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of nitrogen, potash and complex fertilizers, founded by the father of Belarusian-Russian oligarch Dmitry Mazepin.
Nikita and Dmitry Mazepin were subject to sanctions from the governments of Great Britain and Canada, as well as the European Union.
Last month, the EU General Court lifted its restrictions, but Nikita Mazepin is still banned from playing for a team that has ties to his father or anyone already under EU sanctions.
Mazepin has also petitioned the Canadian Federal Court to have the sanctions lifted against him and is now seeking to overturn the UK’s travel ban and asset freeze.
Mazepin’s lawyer, Rachel Scott, said in a written document to the English courts that she wanted her client’s appeal to be dealt with urgently.
