Verstappen runs for the Red Bull RB19 even in adverse conditions

The very cold temperatures at today’s Canadian GP put Red Bull at a significant disadvantage in terms of tire management and for this reason Max Verstappen explained that “in the end the margin we won wasn’t that big”.

Max Verstappen clinched his sixth win of the year, equaling Ayrton Senna’s 41 Formula 1 wins at today’s Canadian GP. Even more impressive, however, was that his walk-off victory came in conditions that didn’t suit the Red Bull RB19.

In particular, the innovative way in which the RB19 limits vehicle dive under acceleration and braking to maintain constant ground clearance results in extremely gentle tire usage.

And while that’s an advantage in hot races, it was a disadvantage in Canada’s cold conditions: even during the race, Verstappen’s tires frequently fell below the thermal operating window. Nonetheless, he confidently took the win, almost 10 inches ahead of Fernando Alonso.

Everything went well on its own, but it was difficult with the tires today because it was very cold“, explained the Dutchman after the end of the Montreal game. “Every time the tires were about to get cold. That’s why we’ve had these ups and downs in our time. It was fine one lap and cold again the next.”

For us, this has pitfalls, especially with hard rubber. For this reason we have again opted for the middle rubber [στο δεύτερο πιτ-στοπ] and i didn’t choose again [τη σκληρή]. I just had a better feeling with these tires.”

The champion added: “We’re usually very good at tire management and I think that worked against us today. Basically when it’s really cold you need a car that uses the tires aggressively. But in the end we won by several seconds.

It was really difficult to maintain the grip and temperature of those tires. The grip was lost very quickly and maybe that’s why the difference wasn’t that big in the end.

I’m not interested in statistics. I just want to win. And I hope it continues this year.”

On the achievement of achieving Ayrton Senna’s 41 wins, Verstappen emphasized: “I am very happy. Despite the tire temperature issues we managed to win again, the team’s 100th win and that’s great. It’s amazing, I never expected to reach those numbers either. We will continue to enjoy it, work hard and today was another great day.”
