It was the 12th lap. Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso arrived in the pits in roughly the same position. They used the ‘safety car’ exit to go in for a tire change. Aston Martin stopped nine tenths faster than Mercedes, so ARonso could beat Lewis on Garage Street. However, the British did everything in their power and closed the door to Alonso. “I had to stop!” Alonso shouted over the radio. After moving the steering wheel left and right when braking the car.
Alonso called for a “dangerous release”, a penalty applied to cars leaving the pit stop area in an unsafe manner.
But Alonso overtook Hamilton a few laps later, shortly after the FIA announced it would not penalize the seven-time F1 champion.
Words of Wolf
After the race, Wolff said of his gestures that mimicked Alonso: “It was a little bit dramatic. The steering shaked a little, the brakes squealed a little…he was good at that…a little drama.”the Austrian pointed out of Fernando.
Hamilton also commented on DAZN F1, this time about Alonso’s Canadian departure. “As I get older, my reaction speed slows down,” he notes jokingly between laughs.
