he FC Barcelona shared a video of a new shirt from Ilkay Gundogan Shortly after officially announcing his contract as a new Barça player. A Turkic-German, his surname not only has an umlaut on the letter ‘u’, but also the second ‘g’ with the characteristic orthographic mark of the Turkish alphabet. This can be seen in a video of Barça in the German’s new shirt, already used, looking back at his time at Manchester City.

This is the soft accent that makes ğ the 9th letter of the Turkish alphabet and makes it stand alone. In Turkish it is called Yumshak g which means “soft g”. Although it is a consonant, it usually serves to lengthen the sound of the preceding vowel letter. In Turkish, the letter ğ is never at the beginning of a word and only at the end of a monosyllabic word.
