Formula 1, Australian GP: Leclerc takes over the baton from Saint in the second half of free practice
With Charles Leclerc as the best time, the second stage of free practice before the Grand Prix in Melbourne was over. The rain didn’t come to complicate matters.
Charles Leclerc “followed” Carlos Saint in first place in the free trials. In FP2, the Monegasque driver was fastest around the Albert Park circuit, confirming that this three-day Ferrari will also have the advantage over its rivals. Unless, of course, the rain, which failed to fall in Melbourne despite ominous clouds gathering in the sky, affects the data.
Of course, the Scuderia ‘broke’ 1-2 in the second leg of the process on Friday (8/4) as Max Ferstappen had a better time with Red Bull than Carl Saint who finished third after his first place in FP1.
Fernando Alonso put in an impressive lap, relegating Alpine to fourth place, overtaking Sergio Perez at a time when the spanish equivalent, Esteban Ocon was sixth.
The upgraded Lando Norris with McLaren finished 8th, in contrast to the two Mercedes cars that did not compete. Russell was 11th and Hamilton was two places behind (13th).
