The Schumacher name will soon return to Ferrari
Mick Schumacher is one of the Scuderia’s two reserve drivers in this year’s F1 Championship, but according to Alpha Tauri’s Franz Toast it takes at least three years of racing experience to secure a permanent spot at Maranello.
Legend Michael Schumacher, Mick’s father – who is competing with the Haas team for the second straight season – was the most successful driver in Scuderia history, winning five consecutive drivers’ championships from 2000 to 2004, in the shortest empire of the team led by Zad Todd and technical director Ross Bron.
Mick is a member of Scuderia’s new driver academy, which brought him to Haas – which has a custom engine partnership with Ferrari – having previously overseen his career in the junior divisions through to winning the Formula 3 and then Formula 2 championships .
But Franz Tost, the current director of Alpha Tauri, who helped Michael – but also Ralph – Schumacher get started, says Mick needs at least three more years of experience with another sports team before he earns a Scuderia upgrade.
Mick is still looking for his first points in Formula 1. And despite having the far less competitive car last year, Haas’ rapid improvement this year gives hope for that. But what he needs to do first and foremost to prove himself is consistently beat the much more experienced and fairly quick Kevin Magnussen in the neighboring position in Haas’ box.
