Hamilton took responsibility for the collision with Russell and apologized to him
Lewis Hamilton has admitted in a tweet that his collision with George Russell in the first corner of the Qatar GP was the result of his own fault and apologized to his young Mercedes colleague.
Hamilton wanted to take advantage of the soft tires at the start and attacked from the outside to overtake Russell and leader Max Verstappen, who started on the medium tires and therefore had less grip.
But the seven-time champion’s plan didn’t work: he collided with Russell, landed in the sand trap with a damaged Mercedes W14 – and was out of the race. Russell continued and ultimately finished fourth in the race after a front wing change and a total of four pit stops.
At the end of the race, Hamilton wrote on Twitter: “I saw the replay and it was 100% my fault and I take full responsibility. “I apologize to my team and to George.
