Verstappen: “I watched the fight between Perez and Alonso and almost went off the track”
The gap that Max Verstappen had built up at the front of the Brazilian GP in the final laps allowed him to watch the battle between Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez for third place on the giant screens. But suddenly things became borderline.
Alonso in the Aston Martin AMR23 and Perez in the Red Bull RB19 each overtook each other in the final two laps of Sunday’s Interlago race, culminating a thrilling battle that lasted almost 30 laps.
At the same time, Max Verstappen was in full control of the race lead, although Lando Norris was not far behind him. He was able to catch a glimpse of the track’s large screens and the battle between Alonso and Perez, which ended in the photo finish with a 53 millisecond lead in the Spaniard’s favor.
“I watched the last few laps.” Verstappen said: “And I almost went off the track when I saw them fighting on the main straight. I almost went straight in turn 4 because I was looking at the screens so much!”
When he talked about the battle he said that Alonso and Perez “It was very close, but in the last two laps they kept changing positions. It was very nice”. And to his own day he added: “Luckily it was a good game. Our starts were good, we also did the right thing strategically and came into the pits at the right time.
Both with the soft rubber and with the Lando waist [Νόρις] He stayed on pretty well, but in the last five to ten laps I was able to increase the lead a little with each set of tires.”concluded the champion.
