Sainz on his accident: “I went over a big bump at the entrance to Turn 3”
“Obviously it wasn’t the Friday we wanted here in Abu Dhabi.”Carlos Sainz spoke on Friday about the accident that occurred at the start of the second practice session of this Friday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It was a violent crash, but he survived unharmed despite hitting the barrier.
“I played around with the car set-up in FP1 and was looking forward to FP2 after making some changes to the car. Unfortunately I went over a big bump at the entrance to Turn 3 and bottomed out on the asphalt. I ended up touching the barrier.”explained the Madrid man, who made adjustments and height changes in his first non-representative training session. Free practice 2 was key to confirming his course for Saturday’s qualifying, but the Madrid native was unable to return to the track after colliding with a wall and causing significant damage to his car.
Carlos will need to make up for lost time in free practice 3 before qualifying this Saturday. Fortunately for him, the red flag by Sainz and then by Hulkenberg meant that the remaining drivers were unable to learn much on track.
“This was a costly mistake and we are sorry for the extra work it has caused our mechanics. I’m confident I’ll be back on track this Saturday and ready to go. Everything looks like it’s going to be tight, so expect some interesting classifications. ”the Madrid pilot has ended.
