Christian Horner is one of the most well-known team principals in the F1 paddock, responsible for a team that currently holds the drivers’ and constructors’ titles and has dominated for the past three seasons. But what some may not know is that he started out as a single-seater driver and, via an incredible story, worked his way up to the top as manager of the Red Bull F1 team. And at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, Horner stepped into the shoes of his protégés Max Verstappen and ‘Checo’ Perez more than ever before, donning a suit and gloves as a driver for a day.

This time, Horner got to dress up as a driver and experience some magical moments behind the wheel of the Red Bull RB8, the car that Sebastian Vettel drove to victory in 2012.

Apparently, according to Christian Horner himself, Sebastian Vettel was due to go to Goodwood this weekend to drive the RB8, but ended up going on holiday instead. Finding himself without a driver, Horner decided to take the wheel himself and drive an F1 car for the first time since 1993, when he tested with Lotus.

“Sebastian Vettel was going to drive one of the cars here but he was on holiday with his family and couldn’t come to Goodwood so they invited me to drive. I haven’t driven a car since 1998 and I haven’t driven a Formula 1 car since 1993. “It was a great honour and a privilege to drive one of these extraordinary cars – championship-winning cars,” Horner, who stepped into Verstappen’s shoes as driver for the day, said after climbing out of the car.

“It’s amazing how fast these cars are and how much of a difference aerodynamics makes. It’s hard to keep your chin off your chest when braking. “I loved it so much that I didn’t make a mistake and go into the pit lane and managed to do an extra lap!”He added Horner.

Verstappen also drove at Goodwood:
