Alonso: “A new bottom or rear wing would be better than just a brain”
“11th place was better than I expected.”said Fernando AlonsoHe did it again. The Asturian player has reached his full potential. Aston Martin And then there was not even a thousandth left. And then in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix, with a car that was not even fit to qualify for Q3, he came close to a miracle. He was just 1 in 10,000 away from the time limit for entering the top 10. All this in a car with Lance. Stroll could have been up to 17°. I couldn’t do any more than that.
Fernando had already pointed out on Thursday that, in theory, this track does not suit his car and that scoring points will be more difficult. But he still thinks it is possible. The driver from Oviedo wants to take advantage of his rivals’ mistakes and attack right from the start to try to score points in a car that often loses a lot of pace in the race compared to its qualifying speed. Good tyre management will be a key factor and this Sunday’s “graining” will make the difference.
“Like I said on Thursday, I think our best hope here is points, one or two points at most, and I’m going to go into the race thinking that’s possible. If it’s not, I won’t be putting the helmet on.”So we’ll be on the offensive from the start. “We’ll try to make up some positions with strategy, tyres or ‘graining’ and hopefully we can do a better job than the other teams,” he explained.
“If the top three or four cars don’t finish the race, there are big points at stake so we have to be there tomorrow to get them.”He commented,
In that sense, when I asked him in the press box if his intelligence in tyre management could make a difference, he was adamant that he wanted to equip the cars with better weapons, delivering a clear message to the factories to bring evolution to tyres and to pursue them as soon as possible.
“Right now I would like to see an updated flat bottom or rear wing, not brains. But certainly, we might see a different race tomorrow at Monza.” he shouted to laughter from the press corps.
“On the other hand, I think all the teams were quite worried yesterday. Every team was saving two sets of hard tyres for the race, and we saw that all the teams did that before qualifying, so there’s no advantage from that anymore. Everybody’s in the same boat. Stopping is probably still the popular strategy. Historically, Monza has been like that, but in the event of extreme graining, the tyres available are the same for everyone, so I don’t think we’ll see many different strategies tomorrow. “Tyres will decide the race.”said Fernando Alonso.
Aston Martin in Reality
“I think we’re always in the middle zone and it’s been a few races since we’ve repeated that same message. We did very well in qualifying, a little bit better than we expected, but in the race we fell back a little bit and faced reality. And the reality is we are still a tenth behind Haas, Williams and Alpine.”discussed the current state of the green cars, which had not made any progress in the previous race.

“Overtaking will be difficult, but with a different tyre it could be very easy to overtake because the tyres are very fragile and probably graining. So I think we will see overtaking in the race,” he concluded.
