Dead motorcyclist’s rival withdraws to allow him to posthumously win championship
Motorcyclist Filippo Rovelli has withdrawn from the final two stages of the Italian National Trophy 1000 to allow Luca Salvadori to become the posthumous winner.
Salvadori suffered serious injuries at a stage of the International Road Race Championships (IRRC) in Germany and died in hospital on September 15. He was the leader of the general classification of the National Trophy 1000.
– Luca, our paths have crossed on the track for many years, but never before have we had as many battles as this year. Every race was a real one-on-one battle. We had two more races ahead of us, two more opportunities to challenge each other.
But today the championship ends for me. Without you, without your drive, your talent, there is no point in continuing to play. This title is yours, Luca, and you deserve it. I would like you to celebrate it differently, to shake your hand and tell you that you are the best. This championship is yours, and it will be yours forever, – Marca quotes Rovelli as saying.
