OFFICIALLY. Formula 1 decides on new terminology for 2026
Formula 1 has officially confirmed the terminology to be used from 2026 with the introduction of new technical regulations.
As F1 notes, the new wording was chosen to avoid artificial names and professional jargon because fans both old and new prefer simple, understandable and meaningful language.
Thus, it was decided to abandon ideas such as X-mode or Z-mode in the first drafts of the regulation. Instead, 2026 terminology is shaped around four key terms.
overtaking mode
Overtaking Mode allows drivers within a certain delta behind competitors to use extra power to overtake. It was designed to replace DRS and make wheel-to-wheel combat easier. The mode can be activated with a single powerful blow or with the use of distributed energy throughout the circle.
acceleration mode
The second is Upgrade Mode. This is a pilot-controlled energy use function linked to the ERS recovery system. This system, which can be used for both offensive and defensive purposes, provides maximum combined engine and battery power at the touch of a button, regardless of the vehicle’s position on the track.
reload
The third term is Recharge, which covers all methods of restoring battery charge. We are talking about energy recovery during braking and individual turns when partial pressure is applied to the accelerator pedal.
Active aerodynamics
The last element is active aerodynamics, which is a system consisting of moving elements of the front and rear wings. They automatically switch between configurations for corners and straights in certain speed zones. This should increase strategic flexibility and enable better use of the car’s handling and power.
