Lando NORRIS: “This is one of the best moments of my career. I cried”
McLaren pilot Lando Norris admitted that he cried a little after winning the pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix and that he overcame the difficulties he experienced at the beginning of the season in one go.
The Briton eventually won his first Formula 1 title, beating Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri at the final Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi.
Norris had a turbulent season, struggling with difficult periods in the first half of the season, particularly in qualifying, but later managed to return to form.
He showed a strong performance in the last nine races, catching Piastri, who had a comfortable 34-point lead at the Dutch Grand Prix, and finished the race just two points ahead of Verstappen and 13 points ahead of his teammate.
Norris’s season was also marked by important victories in Monaco and his home Grand Prix at Silverstone.
“The qualifying lap in Monaco was probably the only lap in the last decade where I cried a little bit about something, because that’s where I was proven wrong,” said the 11-time Grand Prix winner.
“There hasn’t been a single moment this season where I’ve proven myself wrong. I wasn’t able to do my best in qualifying because of the poor results I had at the beginning of the season.”
Qualifying has always been my strength, the best element… It’s been my strength since Karting; All my results in qualifying have always been my trump card and they were not there at the beginning of the season.
When I went to the hardest track for qualifying, I closed the time delta on the wheel for the first time that weekend, so I couldn’t see if my lap was better or worse… It wasn’t my best track before.
“Doing that lap at the end of qualifying is one of the best moments of my career because it was almost the period where I doubted myself the most in the most important season.”
