Verstappen’s former chief mechanic appointed to important role in Audi F1
Lee Stevenson, Max Verstappen’s former chief mechanic at Red Bull, has been promoted to the Audi F1 team.
The Briton worked at Red Bull for almost two decades and in May 2024 moved to Sauber, which is preparing to rebrand as Audi in 2026 and also introduce new regulations. Stevenson served as Sauber’s chief mechanic and now takes charge of the team as Audi manager ahead of his Formula 1 debut.
It’s worth noting that Stevenson isn’t the only former Red Bull employee in a key position; Jonathan Whitley, who also left Milton Keynes, serves as team manager.
Audi will introduce the car and its new livery for the 2026 season at the launch in Berlin on January 20, and the first launch of a car with its own engine took place today at the Barcelona-Catalonia circuit. The team says it started the engine for the first time in December, marking an important milestone on the way to the starting line.
