The former McLaren pilot explained why he left the team. not fired
Former McLaren academy driver Alex Dunn has revealed that his surprise departure from the Woking team was entirely his own decision.
At the beginning of October 2025, it became known that the Irishman left the McLaren driver development program and ended his cooperation with the Papaya team.
Dunn joined the program in May 2024 and took part in the first practice sessions for last season’s Austrian Grand Prix before making his second appearance at Monza.
After announcing his retirement, the Formula 2 driver said it was a “mutual decision”.
According to Dunn, his decision to leave McLaren was due to his desire to enter Formula 1, which was the main goal of his career.
“I have a goal and a clear plan: to become a Formula 1 driver,” Dunn said. he said.
From the options I had, I chose the one that would allow me to progress towards F1.
Actually, it was my decision. He wasn’t 100% sure when my dad and I discussed this, but he usually always was! In my opinion, this is a step in the right direction and I am quite comfortable with it. “I think we will be in a good position in the future.”
