Ferrari: “Leclerc and Saint free to duel”
Scuderia director Matthias Binotto has made it clear that the Italian team will prioritize Charles Leclerc for Carlos Sainte this year – at least not yet – despite the Monegasque’s already large lead over the Spaniard.
After his worst weekend with Ferrari at the Australian Grand Prix, where a series of problems left him in 9th place and led him to retire and abandon the race, Carlos Sainte is already 38 points behind winner Charles Leclerc of Bahrain and Australian GP-in the ranking list.
But the year has only just begun, with 20 GPs remaining, and Maria Binoto reaffirms her initial promise that the ‘anointing’ of the team’s priority on one of its two riders for this year’s championship will go to the winner. But that moment hasn’t come yet.
Many F1 pundits, such as Eddie Irvine – a former Scuderia driver in the days of Michael Schumacher – have suggested that Ferrari should rush to give Leclerc the upper hand to protect him from Max Ferstappen and Red Bull Racing in the title race .
However, Binoto says there will be no such decision by the Italian team at this point: “You can fight freely, I think that’s important to us. It is very important for Carlos to show his speed and he will come back stronger. I will enjoy their fight for a good place in the championship!”he stressed.
Speaking on the difference between Leclerc’s performance from Saint so far and the – as it turns out so far – dominant Ferrari F1-75, the Italian said: “I think the last year was important for him (Leclerc), for his maturity. If you look at tire management it’s been very good (in Australia) and that’s something it’s learned. If we compare it to his first year F1, it’s definitely a big change.”
Finally, the Scuderia strongman refused to be seduced by the Cavallino’s performance: ““We don’t have the league under control at the moment, there have only been three games.” he said.
“We’re still focused on each individual race and that will be our approach for the next ones. We know you have to be perfect to have three good days and win. That’s how it was in Bahrain. In Jeddah we weren’t perfect and we lost. “We give our best in every game and we will do the same at Imola and in the following games.”

Legendary rally champion reacted to Ferrari’s decision regarding his son
Carlos Sainz Sr., father of Carlos Sainz and two-time world rally champion, has commented on Ferrari’s decision to replace his son with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
Sainz was left without a seat at Ferrari last year and later joined Williams. In 2025, the Spaniard outperformed Hamilton and achieved two podiums, while the Briton had none.
Carlos Sainz Sr. emphasized that neither he nor his son criticized Hamilton:
“It’s not our problem, it’s not Carlos’ problem. Ferrari was close to winning the constructors’ championship in 2024, but this year the team has faced difficulties. My advice, and Carlos agrees, is to focus on your work. The world is already too complex to worry about everyone. Let people draw their own conclusions,” he said.
At the same time, Sainz Sr. believes that his son can become a world champion:
“I have a lot of confidence in him and I want to believe that it is possible. I am his father and I have seen how talented he is. If he is in the right place at the right time, he can really achieve this. Everything has to match perfectly. He works and fights for it,” he added.
The rally champion also noted that success depends on the car and the team:
“Unfortunately, I don’t have a crystal ball to know how teams are preparing for radical changes in F1. It all depends on the engine and the chassis. It would be good for Williams to produce a competitive car and fight for the podium. Now they can be at the bottom, middle or top of the table and under the new rules the stronger teams have more resources.”

Mercedes leader challenges Verstappen: “He’s the one I want to fight with”
Mercedes driver George Russell says he is ready to prove his ability to challenge for the Formula 1 championship and is not afraid to confront Max Verstappen directly.
The Briton had been driving for Mercedes for four seasons but joined the Brackley team just as it lost its leading position. During this time, Russell achieved five Grand Prix victories but had to watch Verstappen and Lando Norris win the titles.
