Wolf: “Regulations must not be violated for the sake of the show”
Mercedes F1 Director Toto Wolff hinted that the decision to have the safety car in Abu Dhabi was made for the show’s sake, so the title fight wouldn’t end behind the safety car, adding that he wanted full transparency on the regulations expect by 2022.
In line with Toto Wolff, other F1 teams – like McLaren – have called on the FIA to clarify the rules so that events like the Abu Dhabi final, which ruled out Max Ferstappen last December, are not repeated under the weight of Lewis Hamilton.
As the FIA launched a thorough investigation into events in Abu Dhabi last week and clarified that its final findings would be shared with teams by the end of February, Wolf said: ““It’s not possible to improvise with the rules of a sport that’s supposed to be a sport.”
The Austrian continues: “I expect actions and not just words. Before the new season starts, there must be transparency in the regulations so that every driver, team and spectator knows what is allowed and what is not. “Ultimately we provide entertainment, but no decision should be against the rules for the sake of the show.”
The decisions and conclusions of the FIA investigation into GP Racing Director Michael Massey’s handling of the events of the final five rounds of the Abu Dhabi race will also inform Lewis Hamilton’s decision on whether to continue in Formula 1 in 2022.
Many F1 pundits have expressed doubts as to whether the threat posed by Mercedes and Hamilton, which will significantly damage F1’s prestige, is real. But McLaren manager Jacques Brown believes the possibility of the Brit leaving the sport is not negligible.
“I wouldn’t be shocked if Lewis stopped. I don’t think we should take it for granted that he’s coming back, we shouldn’t underestimate or acknowledge his frustration – his anger.” said the American.
“Maybe he hasn’t made up his mind yet. Maybe he takes his time, because once he makes a decision, he can’t undo it. I don’t think we should exclude them or take them lightly.”

After several significant personnel changes in the team, Max Verstappen has finally learned who he will be working with in the Red Bull pits for the new season.
At the end of last year, it became known that three key members of the four-time world champion’s headquarters had left. According to De Telegraaf, Jeff Ayton replaced Verstappen’s vehicle control engineer Michael Manning, who left the team after the 2025 season. He has previously worked with other Red Bull drivers and worked temporarily with Verstappen in Manning’s absence last year.

Former Formula 1 champion Damon Hill has warned fans that the winner of the 2026 season could be a real surprise.
