A month and a half after the Australian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso announced that his accident during qualifying tests in Melbourne resulted in injuries to his hands and that it will take up to three months for him to fully recover.

Alpine’s Spanish rider, Fernando Alonso, typically said the condition of his hands was “poor” and that he was dealing with very bad pain after his accident on April 9th. After all, this is why he has been spotted wearing bracelets in Barcelona and Monaco. Despite this, the 40-year-old made it into the top ten and scored points in the last two GPs.

Alonso was setting an extremely impressive lap, setting the fastest time in the middle of the Melbourne circuit, when a problem with the Alpine A522’s hydraulic system forced him off the road. In particular, the loss of hydraulic fluid did not allow him to slow down for the last corner to slow down in time.

The Spaniard tried to stay in control and when he made contact with the following barrier he still had his hands on the steering wheel – which turned sharply on impact of the front wheels. So within a few seconds he was left behind with injuries to his hands instead of a place in the front row.

“Bones, ligaments, tendons, everything sucks at the moment” said the two-time Formula 1 world champion. It takes me two to three months and no surgery can be done, there is nothing I can do. Just to give her a rest. Unfortunately I have to drive every two weeks, so I try to rest at home. But I will need 2-3 months”.

Asked if Alpine considered replacing him with team defender Oscar Piastri, one of the future greats and F2 champion, in recent games, Alonso joked: ““Yes, but we need the points.”
