In a revealing interview with the BBC, Ferrari’s racing director Matthias Binotto said winning the Formula 1 championship is a “goal on another level” and that Scuderia’s plan is to get competitive again this year.

Batia Binoto’s words follow Ferrari’s two strategic blunders during the Monaco GP which resulted in Scuderia losing a convincing win at the most suitable F1-75 circuit of the entire championship.

With that, the Italian was saying the obvious: that the championship needs a lot more and a lot more depth than just a competitive and fast car. The Scuderia strongman therefore said that while Scuderia’s goal is to become champions and indeed remain at the top for several years, it “will take time”.

Ferrari has set a target to be competitive again in 2020 with the new 2022 regulations – as Binoto said: “We have set ourselves the goal of being competitive again in 2022. So our goal is to be competitive, not to win the championship. And it would be totally wrong to change that and say, ‘Let’s try to win the championship because we’re so competitive.

Being competitive is a given. Becoming a champion is another goal. [Το λέω] to take some of the pressure off the team, but I also think it would be a mistake for management to change the goals from the ones we have set.added the Italian.

However, he clarified that bringing Ferrari back to the top of the world is everyone’s ambition at Maranello: “What we are trying to do is without a doubt to open a circle, to be world champions and not just once – to try to stay there. But I think it will take time. Our inner mentality is that we still have to improve than team to win a championship.

That doesn’t mean we won’t do it. We may get that as soon as possible but we are aware that they need more than just a competitive car. ambition is there. Everyone who works for Ferrari has an ambition. I don’t think I should remind her of that.

Rather, it is important to them to devote themselves to the process of continuous improvement. Every race is an opportunity to learn and build to achieve something better. And it’s important to remain individually committed to each race. We don’t look at the results.” concluded Matthias Binotto.
