Hamilton writes Mercedes W13: “Finally it’s a complete disaster”
If there was any doubt that this year was over for Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton dismissed that as well, saying the W13 is “getting worse” and that the Brockley team must now commit to the 2023 car.
Lewis Hamilton tested a new trial floor with a large notch to solve the jumping (porpoise) problem yesterday in the first free practice session of the Canadian GP. The attempt did not bring the desired results, so Mercedes used the older floor of the W13 again in the second test period.
With that, Hamilton completed only the 13th year in the second test, almost half a second behind his counterpart George Russell. And at the end of the day, W13’s ever-worsening problems frustrated him so much that he urged the champion to focus on it full-time “Build a better car for next year”.
In particular, the seven-time champion told his team that the W13’s over-tight suspension made the car almost undriveable as he almost lost control at the end of a fast lap and had to retire. And all this after almost 4 months of efforts by Mercedes to unlock any dynamic of the W13.
“We try many different things, including a test floor in my car that didn’t work.”said the Brit yesterday after the free trials in Montreal. “Nothing we do in this car seems to work. George [Ράσελ] came out in the second tests with completely different settings to see what works and what doesn’t.
I’ll wait and see what he has to say, but for me it was a complete disaster. Touching the curb a bit and the car flies in the air is so hard. I’ve never felt worse with a car on this track. I hope that tonight we will find some solutions. “But the problem lies with the fundamentals of the car.”
The Brit concluded: “It’s like the car just keeps getting worse, it gets more and more uncomfortable the more we try it on. We’ve been working on it for a long time and the situation is what it is.
“I think this is finally the car we have for this year, so we have to make the difficult decision and work hard to build a better car for next year.”
