Dutch Red Bull driver Max Verstappen will retain pole position at the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix after the decision of the stewards over the incident with McLaren driver Lando Norris in qualifying, reports Sky Sports.

Verstappen had to deal with problems with his car which led to Max getting in the way of Norris in the third qualifying segment. The British pilot had to go around Verstappen’s car on the grass to avoid crashing into it.

Verstappen won the qualification in 1 minute 29.304 seconds.

The final decision states that insufficient tire temperatures caused Verstappen to temporarily lose control of the car and he was driven counterclockwise. Norris stated that it was an unfortunate incident, but the responsibility for driving the car lies with the rider.

– As for the punishment, all previous violations of this kind led to a warning, so in this case a similar punishment is imposed, – the decision of the stewards says.

Verstappen has received his first warning of the season and will start the race from pole position. The race will start on October 9 at 8:00 (Moscow time).
