The Spaniard, who had won the second pole in his career the day before, retired due to an injury on the first lap. The car of the Ferrari driver was turned around after contact with the car of George Russell (Mercedes).
The second was the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Monegasque Charles Leclerc from Ferrari closed the top 3, breaking through from 12th place.
