The story of Fernando Alonso at the Australian GP
Fernando Alonso’s Australian GP story could be summed up in podiums, returns and dropouts.
In 2001, his first race in Formula 1, the Spaniard became the youngest driver in history up to that time. The Spaniard drove a great race with little experience of the car before, staying ahead of both Benettonequipment that had its rights.
He got his first podium 2004 and 2005 signed a terrible come back after misclassification. On that occasion he went from 13th to 3rd, staying close to victory, which was left in the hands of his teammate Fisichella.
The victory did not come until 2006, also with Renault, the first and last of the Spaniards in Melbourne. Alonso quickly passed Button after the safety car and led almost the entire race.
The next few years up to 2014 always signed good results in Melbourne, being the “worst” a fifth place in 2009 and 2012.
The worst memory was inside 2016, where he experienced the most dangerous accident of his career when he collided with Esteban Gutiérrez:
Later in 2018 he was the star of a fifth place with McLaren, his best result at the second stage at Woking. As he crossed the finish line, he dropped his legendary line: “Now we can fight (Now we can fight)”. Which obviously didn’t happen.
In 2021 Bad luck crossed Alonso’s path in qualifying. When he was about to set one of the three fastest times, a part of his Alpine broke off and he ended up in the wall. The next day, in the race, the Spaniard had a bad one synchronization with the strategy and ended up going down to the penultimate.
