Hamilton thanks Brazilian authorities for bringing Nelson Piquet to justice for racism
Seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has thanked the Brazilian authorities for bringing three-time world championship champion Nelson Piquet to justice for racist remarks against him.
A Brazilian court ruled that Piqué must pay 5 million Brazilian reais (about $1 million) in fines on charges of racist slurs.
I would like to thank the government of Brazil. They did an amazing thing: they held a person accountable, showing that this is unacceptable. Racism is unacceptable and has no place in our society. So I like that Brazil has shown its values. I want more states to do the same, — quotes the words of the Briton Sky Sports.
The 70-year-old Piquet’s public statements about the Briton went viral online ahead of the 2022 British Grand Prix. Piqué used the word “neguinho” for Hamilton. The term, when used in a derogatory sense or with the intent to offend, is considered racist.
