Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has had a $320,000 luxury brand watch stolen from his wrist while taking pictures with fans, according to motorsport.com.
The Monegasque driver is in Italy, where the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix will take place on April 22-24. The incident took place around 10 pm on Monday in the resort of Viareggio. Leclerc was with friends, including his fitness coach Andrea Ferrari, when he was stopped in the Via Salvatori neighborhood by fans who recognized him to take pictures and get autographs.
Leclerc’s presence attracted more and more people. Using a flea market, the thief managed to remove the watch from the racer’s wrist and disappear before the owner discovered it was missing.
Leclerc reported the incident to the police, who are now investigating and trying to determine whether the robbery was accidental or premeditated.
Andrea Ferrari later wrote on social media that the area where the robbery took place was poorly lit and locals had already complained about it. “Via Salvatori has been in darkness for several months now. And we’ve been reporting this for months now. Well, last night we were robbed on Via Salvatori. Maybe they will finally install the lights? he wrote.
