Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz won the Formula 1 stage in Australia.

The Spaniard missed the last Grand Prix in Saudi Arabia due to surgery to remove the appendix; he was replaced by debutant Oliver Birman. On the eve of the weekend in Australia, there was a possibility that Sainz would not start the second race in a row. However, the 29-year-old pilot completed all free practice sessions and finished second in qualifying. In the first laps of the race, Sainz was ahead of Max Verstappen, who later retired due to technical problems. For the Spaniard, this victory was the third in his career.

Second at the finish line was another Ferrari driver, Monegasque Charles Leclerc, who also had the best lap. The top three winners were completed by Briton Lando Norris from McLaren.

On the final lap, George Russell crashed his car; earlier in the race, Lewis Hamilton also retired. Thus, Mercedes leaves the Australian Grand Prix without points.

The next stage of the championship will take place from April 5 to 7 in Japan.
