McLaren driver Lando Norris showed the first time in qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix sprint race. In his best attempt, the 24-year-old Briton completed the lap in 1 minute 57.940 seconds.

The final segment of the qualifying session took place in rainy conditions. At first, the judges removed Norris’s result from the protocol due to going beyond the track limits, but then reconsidered their decision. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) took second place, while Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) completed the top 3.

At the beginning of qualifying, the grass on the track caught fire for the second time during the race weekend. The first incident occurred in the morning free practice session at Turn 7, and the second at the end of the first qualifying segment at Turn 5. Because of this, the organizers postponed the start of the next segment.

China is hosting a Formula 1 event for the first time since 2019. The weekend continues on Saturday with a sprint race, which starts at 6:00 Moscow time.
