Russell disqualified after Belgian Grand Prix race, Hamilton wins

Mercedes driver George Russell has been disqualified after the Belgian Grand Prix, with his teammate Lewis Hamilton moving up to first place in the standings, the Formula 1 website reports.

Russell finished first in the race at the Spa circuit on Sunday, with Hamilton 0.526 seconds behind him in second.

After the finish, Russell’s car was 1.5 kilograms lighter than the minimum permitted weight (798 kg), and the driver’s result was annulled.

Mercedes lost their winning double, Oscar Piastri (McLaren) moved to second place, and Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc to third.

The other drivers also moved up one position, with the top ten after Russell’s disqualification looking like this: 4. Max Verstappen (Red Bull), 5. Lando Norris (McLaren), 6. Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), 7. Sergio Perez (Red Bull), 8. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), 9. Esteban Ocon (Alpine), 10. Daniel Ricciardo (RB).

Verstappen, who leads the drivers’ standings, now has 277 points, while Norris has 199, with Leclerc (177), Piastri (167) and Sainz (162) also in the top 5. Hamilton, who has 150 points, is sixth, while Russell (116) is eighth.

The championship has entered a summer break, with the next stage taking place on August 23–25 in the Netherlands.
