Three-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen has been given a community service sentence for violating the code of conduct, the press service of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) reports.

The Red Bull driver was summoned by stewards at the Singapore Grand Prix for using offensive language during the official FIA press conference on Thursday. As punishment, he was ordered to “carry out work of public interest”. Verstappen himself has already apologised for his words.

The commission took into account that the Dutchman’s statement was not directed at anyone and was not offensive. It is noted that in such cases, a more severe punishment will be imposed.

Verstappen leads the overall standings this season with 313 points, while his closest rival, McLaren’s Lando Norris, has 254 points.

The Singapore Grand Prix runs from 20 to 22 September.
