Red Bull driver Max Verstappen received a 5-second penalty after finishing the sprint at the 21st stage of the Formula 1 championship, the Brazilian Grand Prix, the press service of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) reports.

The stewards came to the conclusion that the championship leader violated the rules in the virtual safety car mode – his time was faster than the minimum allowed. Verstappen moved from third to fourth place in the final sprint protocol, Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) was third.

Thus, the three-time champion lost one point in the individual competition. He has 367 points and has a 44-point advantage over McLaren’s Lando Norris (323), who won the sprint.

At 21:00 (Moscow time) qualifying should begin at the Sao Paulo circuit. As a result, Verstappen will lose five places at the start of Sunday’s race due to a fine for replacing the internal combustion engine in his car.
