The former head of Formula 1, Bernie Ecclestone said that in the early 1980s he wanted to organize the Grand Prix of the USSR, which could go in Moscow on Red Square.
Ecclestone left the post of head of Formula 1 in 2017, he led the series for about 40 years.
– My goal was to spend the F -1 race on Red Square. We evaluated what can be done, but in the end nothing happened. We had to postpone everything when Leonid Brezhnev died (in November 1982). And we could not continue negotiations with his successors. Russia, and at that time – the Soviet Union, has always been an important part of the world. But in the end, we abandoned the idea of holding a race, ”Ecclestone told F1Destinations.
The Grand Prix of Russia was held in F -1 from 2014 to 2021 at the Avtodrome in Sochi.
