McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri lost second and fourth places at the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix due to disqualification, the press service of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) reports.
Both McLaren cars were additionally checked for wear on the control bar under the bottom. The stewards came to the conclusion that the condition of the bars on both cars did not comply with the regulations.
“The bars were re-measured in the presence of stewards and representatives of the McLaren team.” The resulting values were even lower than those originally recorded by the technical delegate. Car No. 4 and Car No. 81 are excluded from the classification. All other riders are moving up in the classification,” the press release says.
The FIA emphasizes that “unfortunately, there are no provisions in the regulations that provide for any punishment other than the usual (i.e. disqualification).”
“The FIA noted that it is firmly convinced that the violation was unintentional and that there was no deliberate attempt to circumvent the regulations. Competitors have the right to appeal the decisions of the stewards in accordance with the International Sporting Code and the FIA Disciplinary Rules within a specified period, the release notes.
Thus, Mercedes driver George Russell moved up to second place in the final standings, and third place went to his teammate Kimi Antonelli. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) won the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
In the general classification, the leading Norris now has 390 points, Piastri and Verstappen – 366 each.
The penultimate stage of the season will take place in Qatar on November 28–30.
