The 91-year-old ex-head of Formula 1 was detained at the airport in Brazil. A gun was found in his luggage.
Former Formula 1 general promoter Bernie Ecclestone was arrested at the airport in the Brazilian city of Campinas (Sao Paulo) due to a gun found in his luggage, reports Reuters referring to the local police.
Law enforcement authorities found an unregistered LW Seecamp.32 pistol in the possession of 91-year-old Ecclestone during a search. The Briton was arrested and taken to the airport police station.
Ecclestone acknowledged the possession of such a gun, but said he did not know about the presence of weapons in the luggage. The 91-year-old ex-head of Formula 1 was heading to Switzerland by private jet, he is married to Brazilian Fabiana Ecclestone, vice-president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
In May, Ecclestone and his wife attended several events in Brazil, including a stock car competition near Sao Paulo.
