Portugal will play Wales on Thursday at 19:45 at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon in the opening match of the fifth edition of the Nations League.
The Group A4 fixture is only the second official meeting between the two countries, coming a decade after their Euro 2016 semifinal in Lyon, France. It will also be the Welsh national team's first official away game in the Portuguese capital.
The teams last met on July 6, 2016, in front of 55,000 fans. Following a balanced first half, Fernando Santos's Portugal team won 2-0 with goals from Nani in the 50th minute and Cristiano Ronaldo in the 53rd.
That victory was Portugal's only win within 90 minutes during the tournament, which they went on to win on July 10 at the Stade de France. Of the players involved in that semifinal, only Ronaldo is still active in international football.
For Wales, the tournament remains their best performance in a major competition. Their squad featured Gareth Bale, while other historical figures for the national team include Ryan Giggs, Ian Rush and Mark Hughes. Bale, now retired, remains Wales's most capped player and record goalscorer with 111 appearances and 41 goals.
Friendly encounters
Prior to the 2016 European Championship, the two nations had played three friendlies, resulting in two wins for Portugal and one for Wales.
In 2000, Portugal hosted Wales at the Estádio Municipal de Chaves as part of their preparation for that year's European Championship, co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands. The Portuguese team, managed by Humberto Coelho, beat a Welsh side led by player and manager Mark Hughes 3-0. Luís Figo scored in the 21st minute, followed by Sá Pinto in the 44th and Capucho in the 66th.
Wales recorded a 2-1 victory in Cardiff in May 1951 against a Portugal team managed by João Tavares da Silva. Mal Griffiths and Trevor Ford scored for the hosts, with Henrique Ben David providing the solitary goal for Portugal.
Portugal's first victory over Wales came in 1949 at the Estádio Nacional in Jamor. After falling behind twice to goals from Ford in the 11th and 40th minutes, Portugal won 3-2 following strikes from Patalino in the 39th and José Mota in the 65th, before Manuel Vasques secured the victory with a 79th-minute goal.
Following Thursday's match, Portugal will play their first official game in Cardiff in November.
