Real Madrid have spent 225 million euros on six new players under new manager Jose Mourinho while Barcelona continue negotiating key deals as the new La Liga season begins.
The capital club triggered a 15 million euro release clause to bring Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho from Benfica Lisbon to the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid reinforced their attack with 19-year-old Ivorian forward Yan Diomande from German Bundesliga club RB Leipzig for 125 million euros, forming an attacking line with Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe that valuation website Transfermarkt estimates at 430 million euros.
Transfermarkt currently values Diomande at 90 million euros. English midfielder Jude Bellingham, valued at 160 million euros, will also bolster the frontline for Real Madrid, a club renowned for assembling high-profile international talent.
According to Spanish sports newspaper Marca, left-back Marc Cucurella, bought from Premier League side Chelsea for 55 million euros, and French central defender Ibrahima Konate, who joined on a free transfer from Liverpool, will hold places in the starting eleven under the new manager. Right-back Denzel Dumfries arrived from Italian Serie A club Inter Milan for 20 million euros, striker Carlos Espi joined from Levante for 25 million euros, and midfielder Bernardo Silva arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City to increase internal squad competition.
Academy sales balance Madrid transfer spend
Real Madrid ranked third overall in global transfer market spending this summer, standing as the only club outside the English Premier League to match the financial pace of English teams. However, the Spanish capital club recovered 90 percent of their outlay by selling former academy players who had developed through their youth ranks.
English club Fulham, now managed by former Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa, paid 50 million euros for striker Gonzalo Garcia and midfielder Cesar Palacios. Italian club Como, led by former Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, signed Argentine midfielder Nico Paz for 66 million euros, though Real Madrid retain an 80 million euro buy-back clause on the 22-year-old after the season.
Real Madrid also received 20 million euros as their 50 percent share of Victor Munoz's transfer from Osasuna to Liverpool, who are now managed by Basque coach Andoni Iraola. The Santiago Bernabeu club will collect an additional 35 million euros from three other former academy players due to retained sell-on rights.
Barcelona target Rodri as attacking reshuffle continues
Despite the influx of talent, Real Madrid supporters fear president Florentino Perez missed a major opportunity by failing to sign Spain midfielder Rodri from Manchester City. The World Cup most valuable player is now close to joining Barcelona, a move that could strengthen the reigning Spanish champions in central midfield.
Luis de la Fuente, head coach of world champions Spain, said Rodri is the best midfielder in the world, even when operating at 50 percent capacity.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta pursued a contrasting transfer strategy, allowing three players who scored 54 goals combined last season to leave the Catalan club. Striker Robert Lewandowski and winger Marcus Rashford departed on free transfers, with the World Cup hero moving to French champions Paris Saint-Germain, while Ferran Torres also left, bringing just 50 million euros into the club treasury.
Barcelona spent 92 million euros to sign wingers Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi. Gordon cost 70 million euros but is not guaranteed a starting berth under German manager Hansi Flick, whose primary attack features Raphinha, Adeyemi, and Lamine Yamal ahead of midfielder Dani Olmo, a player known for high potential alongside fragile health.
Midfield reinforcements and Alvarez pursuit
Adding Rodri would give Barcelona a central midfield composed entirely of Spanish national team regulars, providing crucial stability following a severe injury to Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
However, Barcelona's ambition to acquire Argentine striker Julian Alvarez appears increasingly unrealistic. Atletico Madrid currently refuse to negotiate for the 150 million euro valued forward, though Barcelona remain hopeful that Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal will permit Portuguese defender Joao Cancelo to return to Catalonia. The uncertainty raises questions over whether spending 70 million euros on Gordon was wise when Rashford could have been retained for 30 million, and how Barcelona will adapt without a recognized central striker if Alvarez does not arrive.
The changes mark a shift for Polish football supporters who followed Barcelona closely during Lewandowski's four-year stint and Wojciech Szczesny's arrival in January 2025. Szczesny currently serves as backup goalkeeper to Joan Garcia following Lewandowski's departure.
While Real Madrid begin the La Liga campaign with a complete squad, Barcelona remain locked in active transfer negotiations. Both Spanish giants sat out the opening weekend of fixtures and will enter the competition during the second round of matches.
