Sao Paulo opened the scoring against Bolivian side Club Bolivar in the second leg of their Copa Sudamericana round of 16 tie at the Morumbi stadium on Tuesday.

The goal gave Sao Paulo the advantage in the tie following a 1-1 draw in the first leg in La Paz. Robert Arboleda scored for the Brazilian team in that opening fixture, while Carlos Melgar equalised for Bolivar.

Bolivar arrived in Brazil looking to secure a historical qualification by eliminating another Brazilian opponent from the competition. The aggregate winner of the tie will advance to the quarterfinals of the Copa Sudamericana to face the winner of the round of 16 series between Argentina's Boca Juniors and Recoleta.

First leg draw and series background

The round of 16 tie was left evenly balanced after the opening match in Bolivia. Arboleda had put Sao Paulo ahead before Melgar leveled the score for the host side in La Paz.

That result left Bolivar needing a victory or a high-scoring draw in Brazil to progress, while Sao Paulo sought to capitalise on home advantage at their stadium in the city of Sao Paulo.

Starting lineups and squad selections

Sao Paulo named an official starting lineup featuring goalkeeper Rafael, alongside Buta, Domingos, Sabino, Iago, Newton Jr., Danielzinho, Marcos, Luciano, Artur, and Calleri.

Alternative options considered for the Brazilian squad had included Rafa in goal, a defensive line of Lucas Ramon, Robert Arboleda, Luis Osorio, and Wendell, a midfield of Danielzinho, Pablo Maia, and Marcos Antonio, and an attack featuring Luciano, Ferreira, and Jonathan Calleri.

Bolivar started the match with goalkeeper Carlos Lampe, defended by Jesus Sagredo, Xavier Arreaga, Santiago Echevarria, and Jose Sagredo. Their lineup was completed by Erwin Saavedra, Carlos Melgar, Robson Matheus, Patricio Rodriguez, Romero, and Dairon Asprilla.

Bolivar's potential selection options ahead of kickoff had also listed Robson Matheus, Ervin Vaca, Erwin Saavedra, and Patricio Rodriguez in midfield, with Dairon Asprilla and Martin Cauteruccio in attack.
