Kyrgios: ‘I played the dumbest point in history, it wasn’t legal but it was fun’
Nick Kyrgios’ victory over Daniil Medvedev on Sunday night (4/9) had its ups and downs as the Aussie missed a break point in the decider, essentially losing a point of his own.
THE Nick Kyrgios (No. 25) won his set 3-1 Daniel Medvedev (No. 1) and qualified for the quarterfinals of the US Open. The Australian tennis player put on a show for the spectators watching the game on Sunday evening (09/04) and collected impressive points.
In fact, he missed an opportunity to grab a break point in the second game of the third set. Kyrgios ran to his opponent’s side and played a point that would have been won for him when the ball went wide, losing his own point.
The world number 25. celebrated the point while the Russian looked lost in the referee’s direction.
After the match, Kyrgios spoke to ESPN about the phase, calling it the biggest mistake he’s ever made in his career: “I think I played the dumbest point in history today. I thought it was legit to be honest. I thought I was playing tennis on the streets of Canberra. Only there could I do that. you saw my face I was very pleased. That was the best point ever. It wasn’t legal, but it was fun.”
Kyrgio’s next quarter-final opponent is Karen Khachanov (No. 31).
