Kyrgios: “I’m tired of disappointing those around me”
Nick Kyrgios spoke about the changes in his career over the past few months and the motivation he’s found.
Nick Kyrgios was the big star in the big match against Daniil Medvedev and secured his spot in the US Open quarterfinals. The 27-year-old spoke about what had changed in his behavior.
“I feel like I play for something more than myself. I have a lot of people behind me, a lot of support. Also a lot of people doubt me and try to put me down all the time. That motivates me even more”, Kyrgios emphasized at the press conference,
“I’ve been away from home for 4 months and most of the time I can’t see my family. So I want to add value to this trip, make it unforgettable for all of us. Hopefully I can do that and then I’ll go home to celebrate.
I will try not to disappoint people. A few years ago I lost here in the 3rd round and that was one of my worst experiences because I expected a lot from myself. Now I can finally prove to them that I’ve worked very hard and am very motivated. If I end up winning a Grand Slam, I don’t know if I will still have the same motivation.
In general, I’ve decided to improve my physical condition first and see how it goes. That year I started getting a lot of wins, so my motivation skyrocketed. Now it’s easier to go to the gym, wake up every morning and do everything right.
I was tired of letting them all down and now I’m making them proud. They don’t say anything negative about me anymore, I wanted to change the narrative. I was depressed and wanted to change that.”
As for the rankings, Kyrgios was clear.
“Ranking doesn’t matter to me, that’s the message I sent tonight. The world saw No. 23 beat No. 1. I don’t care if I’m seeded in tournaments or not, rankings mean nothing .”
