Sharapova admits she urged Serena Williams to return to court last year
Former Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova said she spoke with 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams last year about continuing her career.
Williams previously announced a possible retirement from the sport after the US Open. At the US Open this year, the American failed to reach the fourth round, losing to the Australian Ayla Tomlyanovic.
“It was amazing to see how Serena achieved success and fame during her career and how she maintained a noble tenacity even in the last matches.
Serena and I spoke last year at this time of the year and I said, “With all due respect to this generation, you are much better and you need to get on the court.” Therefore, I am glad that she had a chance here (at the US Open), — quotes the words of Sharapova Punto de Break, referring to the broadcast of ESPN.
Williams has been number one in the world rankings for 319 weeks. Williams has 73 WTA tournament victories and four Olympic gold medals.
Former world number one Sharapova retired in 2020.
