Alkarath is poised to make history with a Grand Slam and No1
If Carlos Alcarath defeats Casper Rudd in the US Open final, he will become the youngest tennis player in history to rise to world No. 1, breaking the record set by Lleyton Hewitt, who was 20 when he rose to the top of the ATP rankings -Ranking.
We didn’t wait for that semifinal against Tiafoe or this US Open to see that Carlos Alcarath (No. 3) is special.
Ever since he was 14 when he won his first ATP point, everyone expected the young Spaniard to become a great player, but what Alcarath is developing is pushing the realistic limits and is actually raising expectations for something very big.
Alkarath, now 19, will compete in his maiden Grand Slam tournament final on Sunday (9/11) and if he wins against the in-form Casper Rudd he will become the youngest tennis player in history to rise to No. 1. 1 in the world rankings and broke the record held by Lleyton Hewitt, who was 20 when he climbed to the top of the ATP rankings.
The world No. 3 prevailed 3-2 sets against Francis Tiafoe and scored his 3rd consecutive win in 5 sets in New York. This was preceded by the victory over Marin Cilic in the 4th round and the epic victory over Yannick Sinner in the quarterfinals, which even saved the Italian’s match point.
“It’s great to fight for great things. I made it to my first Grand Slam final. I can see the number 1 but at the same time I’m so far away. I still have a match against an incredible opponent. He deserved to be in the final. He played a final at Roland Garros this year. It’s my first time.”said Alcarath through Arthur Ashe.
A little later he wrote on Twitter: “Never give up. See you Sunday New York”, He did not forget to mention his worthy opponent: “Much respect to you Francis. Congratulations on the tournament.”
Alkarath will compete in the 8th final of his career and claim his 6th and most important title. He already has two ATP Masters 1000 under his belt (Miami and Madrid this year).
Even Sergei Stakovsky, who has his own fight in Ukraine, bowed to the two young tennis players for their fierce battle at Arthur Ashe.
“You did something special today. Incredible sportiness.” wrote the Ukrainian.
