(Chennai) Carol Zhao advanced to the second round of the Chennai Tennis Open on Tuesday with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Australia’s Olivia Tjandramulia.

Zhao, of Richmond Hill, Ont., won 69.8% of his points on serve and 56.1% on return to win easily in just one hour and three minutes.

The Canadian did not face a break point and herself converted five of her 12 chances.

Zhao’s victory was his first in the main draw of a WTA tournament since November 2021.

Zhao joins compatriots Rebecca Marino and Eugenie Bouchard, who won their match on Monday, in the second round of this 250 series tournament. She will face Varvara Gracheva in her next match.

In doubles, Bouchard and Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa and China’s Han Xinyun, the fourth seeds.
