Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard and Rebecca Marino reached the quarterfinals at the Tennis Open in Chennai, India on Wednesday.
Bouchard, world number 902 in singles, defeated local favorite Karman Thandi 6-2, 7-6 (2) after two hours and 13 minutes of clay court action.
Marino, who is the seventh seed in this WTA 250 Series tournament, meanwhile saw off Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 36 minutes.
Quebecer hit two aces and took advantage of her opponent’s numerous errors – Thandi mainly made four double faults – to cruise to victory. Additionally, Bouchard converted three of her five break points and dropped serve just once against the Indian.
The 28-year-old Westmount player will face the winner of the match between Argentina’s Nadia Pontorska and Germany’s Tatiana Maria in the quarter-finals.
Bouchard also plays doubles, along with Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer.
For his part, Marino will cross swords in the next round with the winner of the third-seeded clash, Poland’s Magda Linette, and Oksana Selekhmeteva.
Elsewhere, Ontario’s Carol Zhao will meet the tournament’s second seed, Varvara Gracheva, on Thursday.
This tournament also features Ontario’s Gabriela Dabrowski in doubles with Brazil’s Luisa Stefani.
