Serena Williams might just be taking a page out of Tom Brady’s book.
Williams, who said last month she would “step away” from competitive tennis after this year’s US Open, once again opened the door to a possible comeback in an interview with Good morning America Wednesday.
This time, the holder of 23 grand slam titles referred to another sports legend.
“You never know,” Williams initially said when asked about a possible return to tennis. “I think Tom Brady really started a trend cool. »
Brady, 45, retired from football last February before announcing six weeks later that he had changed his mind and would finally play at 23m season in the NFL.
Williams, who turns 41 later in September, lost in the third round of the US Open in what was thought to be her final run in professional tennis.
Williams, however, avoided using the word “retirement”, remaining unclear on whether or not his appearance at Flushing Meadows was his last tournament. She even admitted that “you never know” when asked if she might reconsider her decision to retire after her defeat.
The American also admitted that her sister Venus Williams was among those who encouraged her to postpone retirement.
“It’s not over yet,” Serena said of her sister. “He’s trying to pick me up, and I’m like, ‘No.’ »
Williams has made it no secret that she wants to continue playing the sport even though her career is over.
“Tennis has given me so much and I think I will always want to be involved in this sport in one way or another in the future. I don’t know what that participation will be, but I know that I love this sport, I love everything about this sport. It has always been a light in my life and I want to stay active. »
