Carlos Alcarat was defeated by Felix Ozer Aliasim in his first match as No. 1 in the big Davis Cup derby on Friday (16/9), with the Canadian tennis player drawing 1-1 for his country.
On his comeback after winning the US Open and climbing to number 1 in the world rankings, Carlos Alcarath was defeated by Felix Ozer Aliassim in the big derby on Friday (September 16).
Despite leading by a set, the 19-year-old Spaniard was unable to defend his lead and saw his Canadian opponent bounce back from a difficult position to claim the all-important victory in Spain-Canada.
Aliasim prevailed after 2 hours and 55 minutes of play 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2 and a 1-1 draw for his country, as a few hours earlier Roberto Bautista had defeated Agut Vasek Pospisil and had Giving Spain the lead.
Obviously tired from the very tiring 15 days he spent in New York, Carlitos didn’t serve well, hitting just 21 winners, a very low number by his standards, and leaving the court with his 1st loss as the world’s top tennis player.
The Spaniard finished the match with 0/7 break points, who saw his 22-year-old opponent and world No. 13 tennis player with 16 aces and 39 winners, with 3/6 break point opportunities.
In the remainder of the day’s results, Matteo Berretini and Yannick Sinner beat Sebastian Baez and Francisco Cerundolo respectively to give Italy victory after a draw against Argentina.
The Germans needed the doubles again with Tim Puig and Kevin Kravitz to defeat the Belgians.
