Papamichael achieved a historic victory in Tokyo

Despina Papamichael (No. 213) beat Zaondi Yu (328) 2-0 to claim her first career win in a 500-round tournament.

Papamichail hit an impressive 79% on early first serves, winning 59% on 1st serve and 50% on 2nd, while being particularly effective on breaks, ending the match with 5/7 break points.

Papamichail started perfectly, finding a break with “Guten Morgen” (1-0) which she conceded immediately (2-0), but Yu was able to regain her lost serve with the 2-2.

With another break (4-3) and a big hold (she erased two break points) in game 8, Papamichail was able to end the set with a 1-0 lead.

In the 2nd leg of the game, number 213 in the world again managed the first break (1:0), which Yu immediately recaptured (1:1).

From there, Papamichail won the next four games, breaking the Chinese woman’s serve twice and reaching 5-1 to finish the match a little later at 6-2 after 3 match points.

Papamikhail meets Garbinie Mugurutha (No. 12) in the next round.
