PARIS – Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik, No. 35 in the world, won the first title of his career at the Montpellier tournament on Sunday, overturning in the final against German Alexander Zverev, No. 3 in the world, in a straight set 6-4, 6 – 3.
Alexander Bublik, 24, relied on his serve to eliminate the big favorite of the tournament, number 1, in just 1:09 of the match.
The Kazakh fired the Serb Filip Krajinovic in the semifinals of the tournament, after he eliminated Roberto Bautista, the number 2 of the tournament, on Friday.
With this ATP 250 tournament, he won his first title on the main track in his fifth final, after defeats in Newport and Chengdu in 2019, Singapore and Antalya in 2021.
Zverev, the 2017 singles and doubles winner, saw his record blocked at nineteen ATP titles when he came to reassure himself after Canada’s 16-round elimination of the Australian Open Denis Shapovalov.
He was crowned an Olympian last summer in Tokyo, the finalist of the United States Open in 2020 had successively defeated Adrian Mannarino in the quarterfinals and Mikael Ymer in the semifinals.
