For the first time since 2000, the top two lines of the ATP rating will be occupied by compatriots
The first two lines in the ranking of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for the first time in 22 years will be occupied by players from one country.
The world ranking is currently headed by Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. His compatriot Rafael Nadal will move up from third to second next week after losing second-placed Norwegian Kasper Ruud to Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in the quarterfinals of the tournament in Seoul.
The last time two compatriots were in the first two places in the ATP rankings was in 2000. Then the Americans Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi succeeded.
Alcaraz climbed to the top of the world rankings on 12 September. This season, the 19-year-old tennis player has won five tournaments, including the US Open. Nadal, 36, the winner of 22 Grand Slams in singles, was previously number one in the world for 209 weeks.
The new version of the ATP rating will be published on October 3rd.
