SEOUL, South Korea — Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka beat No. 4 Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the Seoul Tournament final 6-4, 7-6 (7/5) on Sunday, claiming his second title on Sunday. ATP circuit.
The 27-year-old, ranked 56th in the world, won in Shenzhen in 2018 but then lost in the final in Delray Beach in 2020 and in Washington last August.
For Shapovalov, currently ranked 24th on the ATP and who at 23 has only one title to his name, this is his fourth straight defeat in a tournament final since October 2019.
Nishioka was impressive defensively and his counter-attacking style ultimately allowed him to gain the upper hand against the Ontarian.
Nishioka made the only break of the first set in the 10th game to wrap up the set in 53 minutes. In the second set, Shapovalov took the lead with his first break of the match in the third game, but Nishioka recovered that break in the sixth.
In the tiebreak, Nishioka hit the mini-break that would make the difference in the 10th point.
